.El Platero, located in the center of the Mesilla
Plaza, is housed in old building which at one time was brought by two enterprising merchants, Reynolds and Griggs, around
1860. In the 1890's the Reynold's family had the Italianate Bracketed, stamped metal store front added to the
building. This was a front that was ordered out of a catalog. Later in 1913, Father Jean Grange acquired the property
and used it as his rectory. Recently, J.Paul and Mary Taylor and their family have given the property to the state of
New Mexico.
Today El Patero houses one of the most complete gift shops in Mesilla. It is your one stop for all your Southwest gifts. Choose from a wide selection of Navajo, Hopi,
and Zuni jewelry, Kachinas and much more. The wide selection of chili products give this shop the reputation of one
of the hottest spots in Mesilla. Try a free sample of our world famous Old Town Fudge. Enjoy our hand dipped ice
